Getting started with Online Poker – Step by Step guide

Welcome to GettingStartedPoker.com, a websites teaching people how to make a good extra income from online poker. Poker is different to all other casino games in the way that you make money from other players, and not from the casino itself, all the casino does is to take a small fee for playing at their tables. Poker is a skill games with luck involved, but over the long term the better players will consistently make money. That is why people can consistently make a good income from poker, but not from other casino games like roulette and slots.

If you enjoy computer games, card games or board games, I am certain that you will enjoy online poker. For me online poker is a fun recreational activity, just as playing a normal computer game would be, but I actually make good money doing it. I consider it a strategy game, and the more I play and study the game, the more money I make. Tens of thousands of players all around the world are making high four and even five figure incomes a month playing online poker, better than most full time jobs. I would guess there are at least 100-200 players making more than $1 million US a year from online poker alone.

Where does the money come from you may ask? It comes from all the people just playing poker for fun without taking the game seriously, loosing a few hundred dollars here and there. At any given time of the day there are several hundred thousand people playing poker over all the online pokersites, the total poker revenue was $5.9 billion in 2008 according to Financial times.

You won’t become a millionaire over night starting with online poker, but if you’re used to strategy games and a quick learner earning close to $1,000 your first month shouldn’t be too hard. It will only take you a few hours reading through this step by step guide to get started. If you already know how poker is played about 20 minutes to go through the first 4 steps of the guide should be enough. You don’t have to make any large deposits either, I started with as little as $50 myself.

Much can be said about various odds in poker, this post will just give you the basics and a simple rule to use. To calculate the odds of getting the card we need to make our hand we need to consider how many unseen cards there are left in the deck. Say we have AKs of hearts and at the turn the board is 3h7h2dJc, meaning there are 2 hearts there, so we would need a third heart on the river to make our flush. You know the value of your 2 private cards and the 4 community cards, so there are 47 cards left in the deck we don’t know the value of. You know the location of 4 of the hearts, so there are 9 hearts left. The chances to make your flush on the next card then is 9/47 which equals 19%. The number of cards left that will make our hand are called outs. continue reading…

Your bankroll is the money you have set aside to play poker with. It is important that you keep this money separate from your regular spending money, so you don’t end up loosing more money than you can afford. You should look at how much money you have in your bankroll when deciding how big stakes you should play. The higher the blinds are the higher is the stake. I usually suggest having at least 20 buyins for the game you want to play, and with buyins I mean max buyins, as a serious player you should always buy in with 100 big blinds or more to any game. continue reading…

The river is the last street in no limit holdem, now there are 5 community cards out there and there are no more cards to come. If there have been bets on all the former streets, the pot is usually almost as big as your remaining stack or maybe even bigger. In this situation it is common to bet all the rest of your chips if you want to make a bet, this is called going ALL IN. It is a very powerful move, and is used both as a bluff and as a bet with a good hand. People playing low stakes don’t bluff too much from my experience, so if you are going to call their last all in river bet I advice you to have a good hand, top pair good kicker or better. Here are some tips to help you with playing the river. continue reading…
