Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world and there are lots of different types of the game. This is a quick guide to poker so we will focus on the most popular poker game online, No Limit Texas Holdem 6 max, NLHE or just holdem for short, I will also refer to this game as just poker in the articles here. Being the most popular game it is also the game it is the easiest making money at. 6 max means that there are maximum 6 players at each table.
The goal of NLHE is to win the pot, either through making a better hand than your opponents or making your opponents fold and win the hand without a showdown. The last part is what we call bluffing, you make your opponents fold their hands by convincing them you have a better hand, usually by betting fairly big. We will now start with some common poker terms you have to know.
Preflop: Every player has two cards, but there are no community cards yet, here we have the first round of betting.
Flop: The first 3 community cards put in the middle of the table, here we have the second round of betting.
Turn: The 4th community card is place on the table, here we have the third round of betting.
River: The 5th community card is placed on the table, here we have the fourth and last round of betting and then the Showdown: The players show their two face down private cards, the player making the best 5 card poker hand out of the 7 cards available, 5 community cards and 2 private cards that is, wins.
Button: The player on the button position is last to act, the button moves around the table clockwise.
Blinds: We have the small- and the big blind. This is money put in the pot before any cards are dealt.
Fish: A bad player who is a looser in the game.
Shark: A good player who is a winner in the game.
More terms will be explained as we go along, now it’s time to look at the different hand rankings in Texas Holdem, what beats what.
Make sure you learn the hand rankings, or print it out if you have to, it is very important to know what beats what. Then you can go on to step 6 and the positions at the table.
